James F. Childress is the Edwin B. Kyle Professor of Religious Studies and Professor of Medical Education at the University of Virginia, where he also directs the Institute for Practical Ethics.Hugh Heclo is the Clarence J. Robinson Professor of Public Affairs atGeorge Mason University after being a chaired professor at Harvard for more than a decade. He is a recognized expert on American democratic institutions as well as the international development of modern welfare states.Robert Litan is vice president and director of the Economic Studies program at the Brookings Institution. He was associate director of the Office of Management and Budget from 1995 to 1996 and deputy assistant attorney general, Antitrust Division in the U.S. Department of Justice from 1993 to 1995. Martha Derthick will chair the panel. She is Julia Allen Cooper Professor Emeritus at the University of Virginia.
