James Sparrow, Professor of History, University of Chicago

Jim Sparrow's research and teaching focus on citizenship and the national state in the Twentieth Century United States. He is especially interested in national political culture and its formation within specific social, cultural and institutional contexts. His current manuscript, Americanism & Entitlement: Authorizing Big Government from the New Deal to the Cold War, looks at ordinary Americans' experiences of "big government" at mid-century and considers the politicized ways in which different groups of citizens accepted, rejected or otherwise contested the legitimacy of expanding federal authority.
