Thomas Edmunds Price was born on October 8, 1954, in Lansing, Michigan, and was raised in Dearborn, Michigan. He attended the University of Michigan, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1975 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1979. He completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

In 1984, Price began practicing medicine in Atlanta as an orthopedic surgeon. He was the medical director of the Orthopedic Clinic at Grady Memorial Hospital and an assistant professor at Emory University School of Medicine.

In 1996, he was elected to the George State Senate, where he served four terms and was the Minority Whip and the Senate Majority Leader, the first Republican in Georgia to serve in that position. In 2004, he was elected to the US Congress from Georgia’s 6^th Congressional District. He served in the House of Representatives until he joined the administration of President Donald J. Trump.

On February 10, 2017, Price became the 23^rd Secretary of Health and Human Services. As secretary, he worked, but ultimately failed, to persuade Congress to repeal the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. During his tenure, he came under scrutiny for using government funds for personal travel. Under pressure from President Trump, Price resigned as secretary on September 29, 2017.
