'Ask not': National service in times of crisis

John Bridgeland, a Miller Center senior fellow, is the founder and CEO of Civic, a bipartisan ideas company in Washington, DC. He is also vice chairman of the Service Year Alliance; co-convener of Grad Nation; vice chairman of Malaria No More; producer of the film Sea of Hope; and co-founder of the High Seas Initiative, to bring the national park idea to the ocean. Previously, Bridgeland was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the White House Council for Community Solutions. He also served as director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, assistant to the president, and the first director of the post-9/11 Freedom Corps under President George W. Bush.

Timothy P. Shriver is a social leader, an educator, activist, film producer and business entrepreneur. He is the Chairman and CEO of Special Olympics, and in that capacity he serves nearly 3.5 million Special Olympics athletes and their families in more than 170 countries. He has helped transform Special Olympics into a movement that focuses on acceptance, inclusion, and respect for individuals with intellectual disabilities in all corners of the globe. In his 14 years at the helm of Special Olympics, Shriver launched the organization's most ambitious growth agenda ever, leading to the recruitment of over 2 million new athletes around the world.

William J. Antholis serves as director and CEO of the Miller Center. Immediately prior, he was managing director at The Brookings Institution, and from 1995 to 1999 he served in government. At the White House, he was director of international economic affairs on the staff of the National Security Council and National Economic Council, where he served as the chief staff person for the G8 Summits in 1997 and 1998. Antholis is the author of Inside Out India and China: Local Politics Go Global and, with Strobe Talbot, Fast Forward: Ethics and Politics in the Age of Global Warming.
