Will artificial intelligence change democratic capitalism?

Philip Bourne is the founding dean of the University of Virginia School of Data Science and a professor of biomedical engineering. Bourne leads a range of initiatives to encourage and facilitate the use of big data in large-scale research across scientific and technological disciplines. From 2014 to 2017, he was the associate director for data science at the National Institutes of Health. In this role he led the Big Data to Knowledge Program, coordinating access to and analyzing biomedical research from across the globe and making it available to scientists and researchers. He was also responsible for governance and strategic planning activities for data and knowledge management. Bourne has worked throughout his career to make biomedical research accessible, has published over 300 papers and five books, and has launched four companies. He holds a PhD from The Flinders University of South Australia.

Michael Lenox is a senior faculty fellow at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center, where he serves as the academic co-director of the Project on Democracy and Capitalism. He is also the Tayloe Murphy Professor of Business Administration at the Darden School of Business. From 2008 to 2016, Lenox was the associate dean of innovation programs and academic director of Darden's Batten Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Since 2016, he has served as Darden’s senior associate dean and chief strategy officer. He helped found and served as the inaugural president of the multiple-university Alliance for Research on Corporate Sustainability, helping organizations as diverse as General Motors, Dominion Energy, NASA, and the NCAA harness the competitive advantages of environmental sustainability. Lenox holds a BA and an MS in systems engineering from the University of Virginia and a PhD in technology management and policy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
