What is a senior fellow?

The Miller Center appoints faculty, non-resident, research, and practitioner senior fellows for renewable two-year contract terms.

Faculty Senior Fellows: academic faculty with primary appointment in a UVA school and also an affiliation at the Miller Center

Faculty Senior Fellows (non-resident): academic faculty with affiliations outside of UVA who work on core Miller Center research priorities

Research Fellows: scholars who engage in independent and/or collaborative projects under the supervision of a Miller Center faculty member or senior fellow

Practitioner Senior Fellows: individuals with experience and expertise drawn from outside of the academy

The term for fellows is typically two years. At the discretion of the director and CEO, they may be named as a fellow for one to three years and may be considered for renewal. A University faculty member, named by the director and CEO, is responsible for the management of all fellows.

All categories of fellows are supported by an Expert page on the Miller Center website noting expertise and contributions, may publish on the Miller Center website, and may use their Miller Center title to publish elsewhere. Research fellows need to seek approval from their supervising faculty member before publishing op-eds or other articles using their Miller Center affiliation.
