Miller Center senior fellow Eric Edelman has been selected by Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain (R-AR) and House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mac Thornberry (R-TX) to serve as the chair of the Commission on the National Defense Strategy of the United States.

Tapping into Edelman’s expertise on American defense and security, war and terrorism, and foreign affairs, the panel will “assess the international security environment, examine the health of the United States military, and contribute to . . . United States national defense strategy currently being drafted by the Department of Defense,” according to a press release from the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, for which Edelman also serves as counselor.

In their final report, Edelman and his committee are tasked with detailing national security threats, assessing the likelihood of hostilities, and making recommendations for how the US government can best prepare to address these threats. The report will be submitted to the president, secretary of defense, Committee on Armed Services of the House of Representatives, and the Committee on Armed Services of the Senate.
