Alexei Navalny, the most prominent dissident in Vladimir Putin’s Russia, died last week while jailed in a penal colony near the Arctic Circle. The immediate cause of death remains mysterious. A lawyer and anti-corruption activist in Russia, Navalny, 47, was prosecuted for embezzlement after surviving being poisoned with Novichok, a Soviet-era nerve agent. To learn more about who Navalny was and what he meant, UVA Today talked with Paul B. Stephan, a senior fellow at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center of Public Affairs.
