'We Got to Try to Unite the Country'

Speaking with Senate Minority Leader Everett M. Dirksen [R–Illinois] following the 1964 election, President Johnson appealed to Dirksen’s sense of duty to pursue a bipartisan agenda in the upcoming legislative session. Reviewing results from the campaign, as well as prior examples of working across the aisle, Johnson told Dirksen that the country “never needed you more.”
