Intelligence Challenges in Combating WMD

Donald J. Wurzel and John A. Lauder consider the special challenges that combating WMD pose for the intelligence community, and highlight specific findings of the WMD Commission as examples of where those challenges are most difficult. Wurzel, a University of Virginia alumnus, served in the United States Navy as a surface warfare officer. He was a member of the senior staff of the Commission on Intelligence Capabilities of the United States Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction (also known as the Robb-Silberman Commission on WMD), and presently is the director of Aret� Associates� national security studies and analysis program. Lauder retired from the federal government in 2004 with over 33 years of management, analytical and policy experience in the CIA, the National Reconnaissance Office, and as an arms control negotiator. He is the former director of the DCI Nonproliferation Center and a member of several advisory panels related to combating WMD.
