Event Details
Mary Buford Hitz writes entertainingly and delicately about her mother, a legendary but atypical Southern grande dame, Elizabeth Scott Bocock. Many of her generation were willing to sacrifice the cultural uniqueness and heritage of their home cities to make way for big business. But Bocock (a member of the Scott family whose extensive philanthropy included the University of Virginia?s football stadium) used a fiery spirit and natural charm to fight successfully for the restoration and beautification of Richmond?s Fan District and portions of the Blue Ridge. Hitz, raised in Richmond, earned her undergraduate degree in history at Smith College and a masters degree from George Washington University. She has lived and worked in Nigeria, the Ivory Coast, and Washington, D. C. Her book about her mother, Never Ask Permission, has been called an inspiration to women who want to pursue dreams and goals that appear too daunting or overwhelming. It is an expose of Southern culture at mid century when civil rights and race relations were at the forefront. A book signing will follow the Forum.
