Former CIA chief of station in Berlin and head of Soviet operations at Langley David Murphy obtained access to previously top secret Soviet archives in his effort to understand why Stalin, in the spring of 1941, ignored intelligence warnings of an imminent German attack. Murphy argues in his important new book that Stalin relied upon two extraordinary letters he received from Hitler in which the German provided assurances that his armies would not strike Russia.
