Lloyd Bentsen (1993–1994)
Lloyd Bentsen served the Clinton administration as secretary of the treasury from 1993 to 1994. He had a distinguished political career, representing Texas as a congressman from 1948 to 1955 and as senator from 1971 to 1993.
Born in Mission, Texas, in 1921, Bentsen received his law degree from the University of Texas Law School in 1942. Bentsen then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in World War II from 1942 to 1945. In 1947, he was elected judge of Hidaglo County, a position he held for one year until joining the U.S. House of Representatives.
After his tenure in the House, Bentsen returned to Texas, where he became a successful businessman and president of Lincoln Consolidated, a financial holding company. From 1987 to 1993, Bentsen served as chairman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee.
