Edgar M. Bronfman, formerly chairman of the Seagram Company Ltd., is a member of the Board of Directors of Vivendi Universal, a leading global media and communications company formed as the result of a merger between Vivendi, Seagram, and France's Canal Plus in December 2000. Perhaps best known for his extensive philanthropic and civic activities, he is the president of the World Jewish Congress and of the World Jewish Restoration Organization and chairman of the Foundation for Jewish Campus Life (Hillel), the Samuel Bronfman Foundation, and the United States Commission on Holocaust Era Assets. He has been awarded numerous honorary degrees and was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1999.
