Gaddis Smith served as the Larned Professor of History at Yale University since 1981 and Professor Emeritus from July 2002. He will be teaching a year-long undergraduate senior seminar on "The Intellectual Roots of American Foreign Policy, 1776 to the Present." He is the author of The Last Years of the Monroe Doctrine; Morality, Reason, and Power: American Diplomacy in the Carter Years; Britain's Clandestine Submarines, 1914-1915; and American Diplomacy During the Second World War. He is currently working on Yale and the External World: the Shaping of the University in the 20th Century.
