Anthony S. Chen, Professor of Sociology and Public Policy, University of Michigan

Anthony S. Chen is Assistant Professor of Public Policy and Sociology. His teaching and research interests include twentieth-century American political development, social inequality, and public policy, with a special emphasis on civil rights, employment, and poverty. With the support of the National Science Foundation, he recently completed a dissertation on the origins of affirmative action policies in employment, and he is currently expanding it into a book manuscript provisionally titled The Fifth Freedom: From Fair Employment to Affirmative Action in the United States, 1941-1972. Professor Chen was a former Miller Center Fellow in Contemporary History, Public Policy and American Politics.
