Margaret Warner, senior correspondent for The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, moderates a conference hosted by the University of Virginia's Critical Incident Analysis Group and the Miller Center. During this session, open to the public, former White House press secretaries Ron Nessen, Marlin Fitzwater, and Jerry terHorst, along with former state department spokesman Hodding Carter discuss with national journalists including Jim Angle (Fox News), Todd Purdum (Vanity Fair), and John Harris (Washington Post) the way the White House gathers and disseminates news during times of crisis and catastrophe. They will be joined by Tom Kelly, press secretary for British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Richard Kerr, former deputy director of the CIA, Lord John Alderdice, M.D., speaker of the Northern Ireland General Assembly, former U. S. attorney general Edwin Meese, Ambassador W. N. Howell, former presidential counselor and Army Secretary John Marsh, Lt. General Edward Rowny (ret.), former arms control negotiator for five U.S. presidents, and others. Other sessions of the conference organized by the Critical Incident Analysis Group and hosted by the Miller Center are closed to the press and public.
