Political Islam and U.S. foreign policy
Peter Mandaville, John M. Owen
10:00AM - 11:00AM (EDT)
Event Details
UVA professor of politics John Owen will host Peter Mandaville to discuss U.S. foreign policy and political Islam. Islamist movements and parties have featured prominently in the political landscape of the Middle East and other regions in recent years, with many choosing to enter the formal political system and compete at the ballot box. Despite a trend towards the “normalization” of Islamist political behavior, U.S. policy towards these groups has remained highly volatile. This event will explore the evolution of U.S. policy towards Islamism over the past 30 years, with a primary focus on the aftermath of the Arab uprisings and revolutions of 2011.
This event is co-sponsored by the Initiative on Religion, Politics and Conflict, as part of its Political Islam Lecture Series.
