Kevin Phillips, a senior strategist for Richard M. Nixon's 1968 presidential bid and the author of The Emerging Republican Majority, argues in his latest work that the Republican Party is headed for disaster. Phillips identifies three broad and related trends as especially threatening: the role of oil in defining American foreign policy; the intrusion of "radical Christianity" into the political debate; and the alarmingly high levels of public and private debt.
