Melvyn P. Leffler is the Edward Stettinius professor of history at the University of Virginia, where he served as dean of the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (1997–2001). He has written widely about national security and the Cold War, and his book A Preponderance of Power: National Security, the Truman Administration, and the Cold War (Stanford, 1992) won the Bancroft, Ferrell, and Hoover Prizes for the best book in 1993. He is presently working on a book on George W. Bush and American foreign policy. Leffler earned degrees at Cornell University and Ohio State University.
