Jay Rosen has been a member of New York University's journalism faculty since 1986, chairing the department from 1999 to 2005. He is the author of PressThink, a weblog about journalism and its ordeals (www.pressthink.org), which has received international recognition for defending free expression, and is a contributor to The Huffington Post. He is the author of What Are Journalists For? (Yale University Press, 1999), a book about the rise of the civic journalism movement. From 1993 to 1997 he was the director of the Knight Foundation's Project on Public Life and the Press, and has held fellowships at the Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University and at the Gannett Center for Media Studies at Columbia University.
