Michael Klarman is one of the nation's leading authorities on race and constitutional history, and is currently a James Monroe Distinguished Professor of Law and Professor of History at the University of Virginia. He clerked for Judge Ruth Bader Ginsberg when she served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and has written for publications including the New York Times, The Nation, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. Klarman is the 2005 winner of the prestigious Bancroft Prize in American History for his previous book, From Jim Crow to Civil Rights: The Supreme Court and the Struggle for Racial Equality (Oxford University Press, 2004).
