The dual shocks of record-high energy prices and global recession have produced fertile ground for policymakers to radically reform America's energy policy. While many have called for increasing production of domestic oil and coal supplies, others have seen this as a unique opportunity to move beyond an energy policy dominated by fossil fuels.

America's infrastructure is in grave disrepair. Analysts have determined that one-third of the nation's roads are in poor or mediocre condition, and the Federal Highway Administration recently estimated that one out of every four bridges is either structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. Every infrastructure sector, from rail, air and seaways, to water supply, sewage and irrigation, to energy pipelines and the electric grid, are in need of significant capital.

On May 15, 2008, the National Discussion and Debate Series hosted the final debate of its 2007-2008 season in the New York Public Library. Four participants had one hour to debate the proposed resolution: Our national interests require a path to citizenship for the 12 million illegal immigrants presently here.

On April 9, 2008, the National Discussion and Debate Series debated the right to universal health care at Boston's historic Faneuil Hall. Resolved: Americans have a fundamental right to health care, and it is the obligation of government to secure that right.
