President Eisenhower presents his views about the State of the Union to Congress. He warns against the Soviet-Communist bloc and worries about nuclear war if Communist countries turn toward aggression. He pledges continued support for the United Nations in an effort to maintain peace and to rebuild the armed forces by adding benefits to make a military career more attractive. He also notes that the outlook for US economy is good and discusses his efforts to improve conditions for Americans in the areas of housing, health care, and education.
