On the eve of the 1936 election, President Franklin Roosevelt defends the New Deal and seems to relish in the Republican attacks. He argues that the New Deal programs protected the average American against the predation of the rich and powerful. "Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me—and I welcome their hatred."
