The Miller Center's scholars include two Bancroft Prize winners, and its academic programs provide unparalleled insight into modern American statecraft.
Governing America in a Global Era (GAGE)
The Miller Center's GAGE scholars and doctoral student fellows from top universities throughout the country engage in research and writing in political history that provides insight to contemporary public policy debate. The best work in political history can and should form the basis of a vital collaborative relationship between the worlds of ideas and practice. The GAGE program holds regular colloquia and panels for prominent scholars from across the country to share their work-in-progress and exchange ideas concerning contemporary debates in politics, history, and current affairs. The program also funds eight Miller Center Fellowships to support the research and writing on American politics, foreign policy and world politics.
Presidential Oral History
The Miller Center's Oral History scholars conduct the sole program in the country which has assiduously collected the oral histories of each presidential administration since Jimmy Carter's, interviewing scores of officials in each administration. Notably, administrations in office commit far less to writing today than in days past, in part because of phones, in part because of subpoenas. Carefully conducted oral history accordingly is a truly essential resource for capturing in first hand impressions what has transpired at the highest levels of government. In addition to presidential oral histories, the Center has also begun to conduct senatorial oral histories.
Presidential Recordings
The Miller Center's Presidential Recordings scholars conduct the sole program in the country which is transcribing and annotating the secret White House recordings made by Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon during the critical "hinge years" in the life of the nation between 1961 and 1974. These tapes provide a stunning window into the humanity and dynamic tensions, as well as the day-in-and-day-out routine, of the modern presidency.
American President: An Online Reference Resource
In consultation with leading presidential scholars, the Miller Center has compiled in-depth essays on every presidential administration, including documents, audio, and video materials. The American President portion of the Miller Center's site is one of the most trusted online reference sources for the history of each U.S. President, and teachers and students across the country have come to depend on it as a supplement to their curricula.
