Report of the Virginia Climate Change Survey

Event Details

The results of the first survey of public attitudes toward climate change among Virginia residents were released at this special panel on Tuesday, October 21, 2008, at 5:30 p.m. Authors Barry Rabe, Visiting Scholar at the Miller Center from the University of Michigan, and Christopher Borick, Director of the Institute of Public Opinion at Muhlenberg College, shared key findings from a statewide telephone survey that was conducted in September. Their presentation included public perceptions of the issue and responses to a range of policy options that are currently in place in other states and are being considered in the Commonwealth.

This panel featured comments from Vivian Thomson, Assistant Professor of Politics and Director of the Environmental Thought and Practice program at U.Va. and Vice Chair of the Virginia Air Pollution Control Board; L. Preston Bryant, Jr., Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources; and John H. Gibbons, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology and director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy under President Clinton.

The Report of the Virginia Climate Change Survey is part of a larger national survey initiative that will be presented when the Miller Center convenes the National Conference on Climate Governance on December 11–12, 2008. This conference, featuring leading scholars and practitioners, will result in a detailed report to help guide the new Presidential administration and Congress.
