Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon

September 10, 1952
Source: National Archives

Republican presidential nominee Dwight Eisenhower, left, took to the campaign trail with vice presidential pick, Senator Richard Nixon, in 1952. Nixon’s foreign policy skill and reassuring demeanor following the President’s heart attack contributed to his effectiveness as vice president. He was unsuccessful in his efforts to succeed Eisenhower in 1960, but was eventually elected President in 1968.
