King Washington?

Source: The Library of Congress

This famous 1796 engraving by Gilbert Stuart depicts the refusal by George Washington to seek a third term, symbolizing the establishment of the tradition of democratic governance. Washington’s refusal to accept a proffered crown and his willingness to relinquish office peacefully after two terms established the precedents for limits on the power of the presidency.
