On the day he signed the executive order establishing the Peace Corps, President John Kennedy, right, met with a strong proponent of the program, Eleanor Roosevelt, left, wife of late President Franklin Roosevelt.  Months later, President Kennedy appointed Mrs. Roosevelt to chair the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women.
