President William Howard Taft

February 28, 1909

When William Howard Taft took office in 1909, many people believed he would continue the policies of his predecessor, President Theodore Roosevelt. However, the new President diverged from his mentor, and Roosevelt became so displeased with Taft's presidency that he decided to form his own political party and run against Taft in 1912. They were both defeated by Democrat Woodrow Wilson.
