Taft En Route to the Philippines

Source: The Library of Congress

William Howard Taft, second from the right, plays cards with his wife and two other men on a boat headed to the Philippines. In 1900, President William McKinley asked Taft to go to the Philippine Islands to set up a civilian government. After the Spanish–American War, the Philippine Islands had become a U.S. protectorate. Taft remained in the Philippines until 1904.
