The Nixons and Checkers

In August 1953, then-Vice President Richard Nixon and his family played with their dog, Checkers, while at the beach in New Jersey. In 1952, Nixon salvaged his political career in what became known as the “Checkers Speech,” a defense of his ethics after a hidden trust fund was discovered while he was campaigning for election with Dwight Eisenhower.
